Once again, the Al-Shabaab militia has launched a deadly attack in Somalia during Ramadan: Terror fighters stormed a hotel near the presidential palace in the capital Mogadishu. According to authorities, there are several fatalities.

Casualties in the Al-Shabaab Attack

At least six people have been killed in an attack by the Islamist terror militia Al-Shabaab on a hotel near the presidential palace in the Somali capital Mogadishu. “As far as we know, one terrorist, three hotel security personnel, and two members of the security forces were killed,” said police spokesman Qasim Ahmed Roble.

Terrorists in Siege

The attack on the Syl Hotel began late on Thursday evening. According to authorities, a suicide bomber drove a car in front of the building and detonated explosives. Subsequently, Al-Shabaab fighters entered the hotel.

Escalating Attacks in Mogadishu

The situation remains out of control. According to eyewitness reports, there were gunshots in the building and its surroundings, a helicopter circled low over the hotel. The terrorists are believed to have barricaded themselves inside the building.

Al-Shabaab’s Resurgence in Mogadishu

The Islamic Al-Shabaab, with ties to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network, has been fighting against the internationally supported Somali government since 2007. Attacks by Al-Shabaab have escalated during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in previous years.

History of Violence in Mogadishu

The Syl Hotel has been a frequent target of Al-Shabaab attacks in the past. Despite being located opposite the presidential palace, in a heavily guarded neighborhood of Mogadishu, the hotel is popular among the city’s political elite.
