Russian Iskander-M Missile Strikes Velykyi Burluk in Kharkiv Region

Velykyi Burluk, Kharkiv Oblast — May 7, 2025 — A Russian Iskander-M ballistic missile struck the town of Velykyi Burluk in Kharkiv Oblast's Kupiansk district on Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the attack occurred around 9:35 AM local time.

Preliminary reports indicate that the missile caused significant damage to residential and non-residential buildings, including shattered windows and damaged roofs. Fortunately, there have been no reported casualties. Emergency services responded promptly to assess the situation and provide assistance to affected residents.

The Iskander-M missile, a short-range ballistic system developed by Russia, is known for its precision and high-speed capabilities. With a range of up to 500 kilometers and a payload capacity of 480–700 kilograms, the Iskander-M is designed to target critical infrastructure and military assets. Its accuracy and speed make it a formidable weapon in modern warfare. 

Velykyi Burluk, a town with a population of approximately 10,000, has experienced significant challenges since the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian War. The town was initially occupied by Russian forces on February 24, 2022, and later retaken by Ukrainian troops in September 2022 during the Slobozhanshchyna counteroffensive. Despite its strategic location, Velykyi Burluk has remained under Ukrainian control, making it a potential target for Russian missile strikes. 

The recent missile attack underscores the ongoing vulnerability of civilian areas in conflict zones. While Ukrainian air defense systems have successfully intercepted numerous Russian missiles in the past, the Iskander-M's advanced capabilities pose significant challenges to existing defense measures. In January 2024, Ukrainian forces reported the destruction of 21 out of 41 Russian missiles launched during a combined missile attack, including several Iskander-M missiles.

As the conflict continues, both Ukrainian and Russian forces have intensified their use of advanced missile systems, leading to increased concerns over civilian safety and infrastructure.
