United States: a magnitude 6.4 earthquake recorded off California, 60,000 homes without electricity

The shock, relatively shallow, occurred about forty kilometers southwest of the port town of Eureka.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred on the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 20, off the northern coast of California, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake caused power outages across Humboldt County, according to local emergency services. In all, some 70,000 homes are without power, according to poweroutage.us.

No tsunami warning was issued. The shock, relatively shallow, occurred about forty kilometers southwest of the port town of Eureka.

In a preliminary assessment, the USGS said the likelihood of death or injury was low, but property damage was possible. California is regularly rocked by earthquakes and seismologists warn that it is almost certain that an earthquake capable of causing widespread destruction will hit the state within the next 30 years.
